What to Expect in Our Classrooms

All classes, Head Start and Early Head Start, have a daily schedule which is posted for parent to see. The daily schedule becomes routine for children so they know what to expect and are secure with the classroom world. In all classes:

Girl building castle

  • Children are greeted when they arrive and they may gather in a welcoming large group story time.
  • When they arrive and before they go home, a family style meal is shared, followed once per day by tooth brushing.
  • The schedule includes various individual, small and large groups for teaching through conversations and stories.
  • Children have a free choice time to explore learning areas with hands on activities developed through children’s interests and individual educational goals.
  • Children go outside each day as an extension of the classroom and learning as they explore and have opportunities to use their large muscles.
  • The daily schedule includes both active and quiet times.
  • Before children go home for the day they share a family style lunch or snack where they talk about what happened during the day and what the children might do when they go home.
  • It’s time to go home, and we’ll see you tomorrow!

All classrooms have a Teacher, Assistant Teacher and Classroom Aide who also is the bus monitor.

Rest Time

In Full Day programs, rest time is important for children. A two hour rest time is scheduled every afternoon. After 15 to 30 minutes of rest time, if a child does not go to sleep, they are offered quiet activities until the rest time is over. Kids are allowed to bring favorite stuffed animal or small blanket that will help them to be more comfortable at rest time, we encourage parents to bring this to school.

Field Trips

Field trips are an important part of the classroom program.  Parent will need to sign a permission form to be able to participate in each field trip.  If we do not have signed permission form, your child will not be able to go on the field trip. Classrooms may also go on walking field trips. Parents in the program can help by suggesting possible field trips, planning trips to parent work sites, and going with the class on trips.
