Home Visits

Center Based Home Visits

Home visits are an important part of Head Start and Early Head Start.

In center based programs where children attend school four or five days per week, teachers will visit each family four times. Home visits provide an opportunity for parents to learn more about child development and share information about their child’s development and progress. Together, teachers and parents  develop goals and plan activities for their children.

In home based programs, Head Start Teachers or Family Support Specialists will visit weekly for about 1½ hour.  In home based programs teachers support the parent as the child’s teacher and the home as the learning environment. Together, parents and teacher develop goals and plan activities for the home and for socializations. In the Home Base option, home visitors will focus on the parent-child interaction and how to best support your parenting skills.

Things to keep In mind about home visits:

  • For you and the home visitor to be actively engaged during the visit. If possible have the TV/radio turned down or off.
  • You will receive home visits from your Teacher or Family Support Specialists and from your Family Worker.
  • Notify your Teacher or Home Visitor if you need to cancel the home visit.
  • If someone in your home is sick with something contagious (strep throat, pinkeye, fever, lice, etc.) please notify your home visitor prior to the visit.  We want to avoid spreading germs between households and centers.
  • Take care of your child’s hygiene needs (diaper changes, toileting accidents, runny noses, sticky hands, etc.) during the visit.
  • Please restrain outside pets before the home visitor arrives.
