Riding the Head Start bus

Please watch for the school bus and be on time for pick up and drop off!   We ask that you be at your bus stop 5 minutes before the scheduled pick up time and know that we could also be up to 5 minutes late due to situations that come up along the route.  The bus cannot wait if your child is not ready.  Please call the center any day your child will not be riding the bus.

There are some rules for children and adults who ride the bus:School bus

  • While on the bus all passengers must remain in appropriate safety restraints.
  • There is no eating or drinking while on the bus.
  • Visitors and volunteers who want to ride the bus need to call the center ahead of time to be sure there is space on the bus. Only parents and other authorized adults may ride the bus unless special arrangements have been made with the Site Education Manager.

Safety Restraint Systems

Children who ride in a Head Start bus will use an approved safety restraint system that is provided by the program.

  • Infants will ride in a rear facing car seat until they reach at least 20 pounds and 12 months of age.
  • Children will be transported in an approved car seat until they are at least two years old.
  • Children over two may be transported in the bus’ approved safety restraint system if the child is developmentally ready.
  • All other children must use the approved vehicle safety restraint system until they reach age 8 or 4’ 9” in height. Children over age 8 or taller than 4’ 9 " must use the vehicle safety belt system.

Head Start provides all restraint systems. We cannot use a family’s car seat or booster seat on the bus or van.
